Fruit Pie Gel Candle

Materials needed:

  • small pie plate
  • wick stickum or hot glue
  • one votive zinc wick
  • one package of wax fruit (strawberry, raspberry, cherry, blueberry, peaches)
  • one pie crust (shell topper or lattice)
  • 1/4lb of high density gel
  • 10ml scent
Place the wick stickum on the bottom of the wick and center in the pie plate.
Place fruit around wick, keeping it level with the pie plate.  It cannot stand higher than the edge of the pie tin or the crust will not fit on.

Heat the gel on direct heat in a candle pour pot.  DO NOT WALK AWAY.  Stir the gel until it becomes the consistency half way between corn syrup and water. Add scent and stir well. Cover the fruit to the very edge of the pie tin and quickly add the crust.  The crust should attach to the pie tin and fruit with the gel. For the shell topper, apply a piece of accent fruit by dipping the fruit in gel and adhering to pie crust

    Fruit Cocktail Gel Candle

Material

1260Pillar wax

Fruit molds

Dye

3-4z wick

Fruit Slices scent

Gel Wax

16 oz jar

Embeds

Melt 1260 wax in a double boiler to approx. 175. Add dye

corresponding with the fruit you are making. We will be making blueberries, raspberries, peaches, melons and strawberries. Let fruit cool completely before using in candles.

Wicking

Place a wick stickum on the bottom of a 3-4z wick. Center the wick in the bottom of the jar. We use a 3-4z wick so the candle tunnel burns and the wax embeds around the outside of the jar are not disturbed. If you want your candle to completely melt out to the edge you need to use a 4-5z wick.

Place the fruit embeds around the wick, layering them evenly up the jar. If you want a lid to fit on the jar, do not layer the fruit higher than the lip.

Gel

Heat gel on direct heat in a candle pour pot. DO NOT WALK AWAY. Stir gel until it becomes the consistency of corn syrup. Add gel safe fragrance and stir well. Cover fruit to the top of the jar.  Trim the wick to 1/4”.

Decorate the jar with gingham fabric or raffia for a country look. Add cute label and its ready for the bakery candle display.

Hand and Body Lotion

2mls of skin safe scent
Bath and Body Dye
2 cups of Distilled Water

Add 2 cups of warm distilled water and 2mls (approx 14 drops) of your favorite skin safe scent to 1 cup of natural multi base. Add liquid dye in drops (approx 7 drops) until the desired colour is achieved. Stir thoroughtly. Pour into 4oz bottles with squeeze lids. They can be personalized with labels and ribbons. This recipe will make 6-4oz bottles. Look under the Natural Multi  Base for more instructions.

   Reed Diffusers

Materials Needed:

Mix 3/4 cup diffuser base with 1/4 cup fragrance oil (75/25).
Pour into 500ml jar and stick the reeds in. The reed diffuser base will help draw the fragrance oil up the reed and into the air. You colour can the oil by using a drop of liquid dye.

Firestarters

Firestarters are a great way to use up all kinds of wax bits and wick trimmings. These sell great this time of year for camp fires, but don't forget old man winter. Come November when fireplaces and woodstoves won't start, these are invaluable. The firestarter on the left was made in a 4 oz loaf pan and the one on the right- a muffin tin. Simply fill the container with "dead" potpourri, pine cones, shredded paper, or cedar hamster shavings. Pour melted wax over top- this can be any type of scrap wax. Stick a piece of scrap wick into the wax before it hardens. Generally, firestarters sell 2/$1.00

Tip-you can line the muffin tins with paper liners for easier packaging.

Floating Spring Flower

Materials Needed:

Melt 1lb of pillar wax in a double broiler or temperature controlled pot (not over direct heat) until 175F, add one yellow dye chip and stir until melted. Add 15-20mls of scent (we used hyacinth) and stir. Let wax cool, while assembling and wicking the two piece plastic mold. Pour melted wax into mold until it is full to the top. Keep back aprox. 1/2 cup for refilling shrikage. Let cool overnight. Reheat wax kept back at intial pour. Fill mold with melted wax to the original pour line , allow to cool and remove mold. You can smooth the bottom of your candle by placing a pan on direct heat (low setting) and "frying off" any ruff edges. Trim the wick to 1/4" , place the candle in a bowl of water, light and enjoy.

Container Candles

15-20mls of scent
Makes 2 -250ml candles
Melt wax in double boiler or temperature controlled pot(not over direct heat) until 175F, add one colour chip and stir until it is dissolved. Add scent and stir. Stick wick stickum on bottom of the wick and place the wick in the center of the jam jar. Pour melted wax into jars to within 1" of the top. Keep back 1/2 cup for refilling shrinkage. Let sit over night. Reheat wax kept back at the inital pouring. Center wick if necessary. Fill jars to original fill line. Allow to cool thoroughly. Trim wicks to 1/4" before lighting.

                                  15 Hour Votive

Product recommendation for votives (makes 8 - 2 oz.votives): One pound of IGI 4794-Premixed Votive Wax, one dye chip, 15 ml scent and 8 pretabbed votive wicks, 8 votive molds.

Melt wax in double boiler or temperature controlled pot (not over direct heat) until 175 F, add colour chip and stir until dissolved. Add scent and stir. Pour into votive molds to within 1/4" of top. Keep back 1/2 cup for refilling shrinkage. Let sit until wax creates a "skin" -approx. 2-5 minutes. With a skewer, insert the pretabbed votive wick in centre and push to bottom. Let sit for 1 hour. Reheat the wax kept back at the initial pouring. Centre wick if necessary. Top votives until full and slightly rounded. Allow to cool thoroughly. Candles should drop from molds after several hours, if not, put in refridgerator for 5 - 10 minutes to help them release.

Try using the 1274 wax for a different finish, or retopping in a different color. These candles must be burned in a tight holder as they liquify. They should last 15 hours.

If your retop pops off, you need to pour hotter. If your retop "sinks" and your candle has a "belly button", you have retopped too soon. If your candle has a "small popped bubble hole" on top, then you retopped too late. An overall rustic finish can be achieved by pouring at 160F. Shiny votives need to be poured at 185F.

Have fun!

Antibacterial Liquid Hand Soap

Add 15 ml to 30 ml of soap safe fragrance oil to 4L of Liquid Hand Soap. Adding too much fragrance oil can cause the base to become thinner and cloud. Add liquid Bath & Body dye, one drop at a time, until desired color is achieved. You can add 2 to 4 tablespoons of jojoba beads for exfoliation and a neat visual effect. Stir thoroughly but gently. Pour into bottles with a funnel. That’s all there is to it!

4L of base will make approximately 30 4oz bottles. This product sells well year round at craft shows, it is practical and affordable.

Grubby Snowman Candle

This candle is made with the Large Snowman mold 5"x4" from Flexiblemolds.com You can order this mold from us for $37.45 CDN. It has a slit along the side, which makes it much easier to unmold. Make sure that the slit is matched tightly and the elastics are in place before pouring.
Melt 1.2 lbs of either IGI4625 or IGI1274 pillar wax in a double boiler to 175F. Add 2 tbsp of Striped Candy Cane or Jack Frost fragrance oil, no color is necessary. Pour slowly into the mold until it is level. Let set for 30 minutes or until the consistency of fudge. Create a wick hole, using a wick rod or scrap of clothes hanger, pushing into the middle of the wax. DO NOT push the rod through the mold. You can skip this step if you prefer to drill the wick hole. Poke additional holes around the centre to allow the wax to shrink and tunnel.

Once the wax is solid, remove the elastics and rod and unmold the candle. From the bottom, wick the candle with a 34ptc wick and fill the shrunken area with additional wax heated to 180F. This will seal in the wick. Using a solder iron, create a small melt pool and quickly place black buttons on for eyes, along with other embellishments.

Trim wick and remove all flammable items before lighting. He smells as good as he looks!

 Aroma Beads

aromabead.jpg (7748 bytes) AromaBeads can hold up to 30% fragrance load. Package in a jar with our smelly jelly lids, or in organza bags for a fancier presentation.

Mix 2 drops of liquid dye with 1 tablespoon of fragrance oil and stir well. Add 4 tablespoons of AromaBeads and stir. Seal the jar and shake every so often. The beads will take from 1 to 5 days to absorb all of the oil.

If you want to layer your colours, make the beads separate and once they are absorbed, then layer the colours.

This is our 8oz jelly jar, smelly jelly lid, new(.gif (2574 bytes) 5 ml cobalt blue dye and 30 ml pearberry fragrance and 8 oz of AromaBeads.

Aroma Bead Ornaments

Make the aroma beads as directed above. Choose a metal cookie cutter in a shape you want for your ornament. Lay the cookie cutter on a metal non stick cookie sheet. Fill the shape with the beads, completely covering the bottom and about 1/4" deep. Bake in the oven at 350 degrees for about 5-10 minutes or until the beads have completely melted together. (the ornaments will be a bumpy, not smooth) Remove from the oven and let cool. Carefully remove the cookie cutter and peel the shape off the cookie sheet. Using a hole punch make a hole and string some ribbon through to hang.

Spiced Pumpkin Tart Candle
pumpkintart1.jpg (22036 bytes)

You can use the tins from small meat pies for individual servings or this can be done in a pie plate and sliced while still warm.

First, melt 1260 wax and dye with ivory dye chips. You can add vybar if you would like to scent the shell with vanilla or butter cream. Pour into the tin at 160F and set up for apx. 10 minutes. Dump out the liquid wax to use for frosting, leaving the shell. While still pliable, crimp edges like you would pastry (assuming you bake-unlike me!)

pumpkintart2.jpg (24437 bytes) Melt #4786 wax and add rust colour and spiced pumpkin pie fragrance. Pour into the shell at 160F so you dont melt the shell and wick with a self centering votive wick.
pumpkintart3.jpg (38837 bytes) When the "filling" is set, soften the remaining 1260 wax dumped out earlier and whip with a fork. Spoon onto the top of the candle and trim wick.

Happy Thanksgiving!!

Margarita Glass

drinkmugs.jpg (31380 bytes)

These drinking mugs were purchased at our local Canadian Tire. You will need 1 lb of IGI 4786 wax, Yellow or cerise dye, 30 ml Pink Lemonade fragrance oil (on sale for $12.99/lb!), and 2-3" diameter wick . Melt wax in a double boiler until 180F. Add just a fraction of either a yellow or cerise dye chip. Stir until completely dissolved. Add fragrance oil, stir and pour immediately into jar, except for 2 ounces. Let this set in jar until it starts to "thicken" on the base. Straighten a wick and lower in the jar, until it "catches" in the thicker wax. Tip: A wick stick would make this job much simpler. Keep an eye that the wick remains straight as the wax cools. Let set for 2 hours, then reheat the wax set aside from the initial pour and retop the candle.

The jar can later be dipped in hot wax and then vegetable stearic acid to create the sugared rim shown here.

Have fun!

Dipped Bears

These little smelly critters are the new rage! For all the places you love to smell a candle, but can't have an open flame, this little guy does the trick. The teddy is immersed in scented wax and when finished, it becomes a room deodorizer. Great for closets, cars, stale basements or any room that you would burn a candle in. Also excellent for nursing homes and dorms.

Recipe

You will need:

  • 4625 Wax (1/2lb per bear) , plush animal, 30-40 ml scent, pour pot

  • rubber gloves, foil pie plate, hair dryer, fork

Melt wax in pour pot to apx 160F. Add scent. Immerse bear in scented wax and squeeze out excess. Use a fork to comb out the fur. Place bear on pie plate and pose. Use hair dryer to clean up eyes and nose and to clean up any unwanted bits. This part can get pretty smelly, so make sure your room is well ventilated.

These critters will smell for up to 6 months. When the smell fades, simply blow again with the hair dryer to revive scent.

Enjoy!

Embed Pillar and Core Candle

Material needed:
1 3x4 and 1 4x4metal mold and sealer
1 1/2lbs of 4625
2/0 cotton wick
dried apple slices
cinnamon sticks
30ml fresh apple fragrance
skewer
pour pot

Basic pillar core candle
Using a double boiler, melt 1 1/2lbs of 4625 wax to approx. 180 . Wick 3x4 mold using 2/0 cotton wick. (Normally you would use a #1 cotton wick with this size of mold, but you want this candle to tunnel burn so we down sized the wick). Add 30mls of fragrance oil  to wax and mix well. Pour into 3x4 mold and set aside and let cool. Set aside remaining to use on outer shell.

Embed Candle
Plug the wick hole on the 4x4 mold with a magnet or silicone. The wick hole is not needed as the core candle will be what is lit. Center the core into the 4x4 mold. Space the apple slices and cinnamon sticks evenly around the core. (Do not get the embeds close the the wick of the core candle, this will cause a second point of ignition).  Get the embeds as close to the wall of the mold as possible, using small pieces of wax to support the embeds will ensure a tight fit. Melt remaining wax to approx 180 and carefully pour over the embeds. Let cool and remove from the mold. Using a hair dryer melt away some of the outer wax shell to expose the apple slices and cinnamon sticks. Place candle on a plate and decorate with left over apple slices and cinnamon sticks.
